Mothers Day: Love and Gratitude

Mothers Day: Love and Gratitude

As small business owners, special days like Mother's Day, Father's Day, celebrations and holidays carry more weight than they used to. What I mean is, we've come to see there are different perspectives, and we work to hold and make space for many different beliefs and experiences.

Of all the special days, Mothers Day feels the most loaded. There is joy and deep sadness, and everything in between. For some it’s a day to celebrate with their mums, and their children, but for others it can be a reminder of loss, longing and complicated relationships.

I've always known the unconditional love of my mum, and I have the absolute gift of being the mother of two daughters. I understand what a privilege that is. I hope one day my daughters will also know the joy of motherhood, but I realise this might not be their path.  My wish is for their lives to be full and meaningful, whatever is in their future.

Just the other day, Amy and I shared memories of the women who stepped in for us and while we worked outside the home and our kids were younger. The love they showed our children, and the affection our children had for them was so genuine and selfless. We both feel a tinge of regret that we’ve lost touch with both of these women but mostly we remember them with deep gratitude and love.

This conversation made me think about the significance of the role of Motherhood that we are honouring. Not only our mums who raised us, but all of the women in our lives, who nurtured us in different ways, for however long. Protecting us, loving us, teaching us, guiding us.

Mother’s Day is a day to remember and honour all the women who have touched our lives in meaningful ways. In every form it takes, Motherhood plays a powerful role in guiding and shaping children into the adults they will become.
